Liberty Pole Spirits, a distillery based in North Strabane, Pennsylvania, has achieved notable recognition at the Pennsylvania Farm Show. The distillery received the first prize in the rye whiskey category for its Old Monongahela Full Proof Rye Whiskey and secured second place in the flavored whiskey classification for its spiced whiskey. This year marks a significant milestone as it is the first time distilled spirits have been included in the competition, which runs through Saturday in Harrisburg.
The Pennsylvania Farm Show showcases a diverse array of entries, ranging from livestock to artisanal foods and handmade goods. Jim Hough, owner and operator of Liberty Pole Spirits alongside his family, expressed pride in the achievements. “To be the best rye whiskey in Pennsylvania is pretty nice,” he remarked. The spiced whiskey that garnered second place is a special holiday edition, highlighting the distillery’s commitment to quality and innovation.
Hough noted that while Liberty Pole Spirits has participated in various competitions in the past, entering contests is not a central focus of their marketing strategy. “We’ve done some things in the past,” he explained. Although the distillery is considering additional competitions, it currently does not distribute outside Pennsylvania. As a result, national contests encompassing all 50 states may have limited relevance for their business.
Established as a small business, Liberty Pole Spirits was recognized by the U.S. Small Business Administration as the small business of the year in Western Pennsylvania. Hough’s journey into whiskey production began as a hobby while he was employed in the finance sector. The distillery’s initial location on West Maiden Street in downtown Washington has since moved to its current site on Adios Drive, conveniently located near the Hollywood Casino at the Meadows.
Hough emphasized the importance of local businesses in the community, stating, “People appreciate small businesses, local businesses.” This sentiment resonates with many customers who seek out local products and support regional enterprises. With its recent accolades, Liberty Pole Spirits not only contributes to the local economy but also elevates the profile of craft distilling in Pennsylvania.
