Sky Announces Eight-Part Series Adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Sky has officially announced the development of an eight-part television series adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The production will be led by Left Bank Pictures, known for acclaimed projects such as The Crown and Dept Q. This new series aims to provide a “bold and contemporary reimagining” of Stieg Larsson’s bestselling novels, which have collectively sold over 100 million copies worldwide.

The series promises to remain true to the core elements of Larsson’s work, focusing on the characters and investigative themes that have resonated with audiences. According to Sky, the adaptation will reflect contemporary issues, ensuring that the narrative carries heightened relevance in today’s society.

The original novel, first published in 2005, has been previously adapted into a successful film. Directed by David Fincher and featuring actors Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara, the 2011 film became a cultural phenomenon. It followed the story of disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the enigmatic hacker Lisbeth Salander as they worked together to unravel a decades-old mystery. The film was followed by a sequel, The Girl in the Spider’s Web, directed by Fede Álvarez in 2018.

While casting details for the upcoming series have yet to be revealed, production is set to begin in spring 2024 in Lithuania. The show will be written and executive produced by Steve Lightfoot, known for his work on The Punisher and Behind Her Eyes, alongside Angela LaManna, who has credits including The Haunting Of Bly Manor.

In addition to Lightfoot and LaManna, other executive producers include Andy Harries, Charlotte Moore, and John Phillips from Left Bank Pictures, as well as Sam Hoyle for Sky.

The series will be available to audiences in the U.K., Ireland, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria through Sky’s platforms. Sony Pictures Television will manage international distribution, with pre-sale efforts already in progress in the United States.

As anticipation builds for this new adaptation, fans of the Millennium series can look forward to a fresh take on a classic story, promising intrigue and modern relevance.
