IRS Free File Opens Early as Tax Season Kicks Off; GDOT Completes Major Projects

UPDATE: The IRS has officially begun accepting federal income tax returns as of January 9, 2026, through its IRS Free File program, allowing eligible taxpayers an early shot at filing their 2025 returns. This development is crucial as it gives millions the chance to prepare ahead of the official filing season, which launches later this month.

Taxpayers earning $89,000 or less can benefit from free, guided tax software provided by eight private-sector partners. This means they can start their tax preparations now and submit electronically once the full filing season kicks off. For those with incomes exceeding this threshold, Free File Fillable Forms will be available starting January 26, offering a self-preparation option.

The IRS Free File initiative also allows eligible individuals to claim significant refundable tax credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit, potentially resulting in refunds even if no tax is owed. Taxpayers can explore their options and choose a trusted partner at IRS.gov/freefile.

In parallel, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has announced the completion of five major transportation projects across Northwest Georgia, now open to traffic. Among these is a $9 million project that replaced two aging bridges on State Route 136 over the Coosawattee River and a nearby tributary. These new structures were designed to enhance safety and capacity and are now serving the community following their completion.

Other completed GDOT projects include the $26.8 million Villa Rica Bypass in Carroll County, a bridge replacement on SR 293 over Dykes Creek in Floyd County costing $8.5 million, and the rehabilitation of multiple bridges on I-59 in Dade County for $4.9 million. The total investment for these five projects exceeds $51 million, highlighting GDOT’s commitment to improving transportation infrastructure.

In corporate news, Food City has announced notable leadership changes following the retirement of Ross Purdy, Vice President of Center Store Operations.
