Overnight Lane Closures on I-95 South Set to Reshape Traffic Flow

Southbound traffic on Interstate 95 in Philadelphia will experience significant overnight lane closures starting next week, as part of a long-term traffic shift linked to a crucial bridge repair project. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that construction will begin on January 13, 2024, and continue through January 16, 2024, aimed at establishing a new traffic pattern between Spruce Street and Packer Avenue.

During the overnight work, a single lane will close each night from 21:00 to 00:00, followed by a double lane closure from 00:00 to 05:00. PennDOT anticipates substantial backups and delays during this period. By 05:00 on January 17, crews are expected to implement a revised traffic configuration that will remain in effect until late May.

Details of the Bridge Repair Project

This construction effort is part of a larger $37.4 million federally funded project designed to address high-priority repairs on interstate bridges. PennDOT’s initiative aims to enhance safety, mobility, and structural integrity along one of the region’s busiest corridors.

Under the terms of the contract, crews will focus on repairing deteriorated bridge decks, steel superstructure components, prestressed concrete beams, and bridge railings. Additional work includes replacing expansion joints and deck seals, as well as substructure repairs on bearings and concrete elements. The project will also involve cleaning and repainting 11 overhead steel sign structures and upgrading existing roadway lighting to energy-efficient LED luminaires.

IEW Construction Group, Inc., based in Hamilton, New Jersey, is the general contractor overseeing this extensive undertaking. With the planned overnight closures leading to a prolonged traffic shift, motorists are advised to prepare for potential disruptions and to stay informed as conditions evolve.
