Grand Forks Public Schools Associate Superintendent Catherine Gillach has decided to withdraw her acceptance of the superintendent position at Hawley Public Schools in Minnesota, citing personal reasons. Gillach informed the Hawley School Board of her decision on December 17, 2023, stating she could no longer assume the role she had verbally accepted.
In explaining her choice, Gillach remarked, “It was a really difficult decision, but what’s right for my family.” She clarified that she had not officially resigned from her position at Grand Forks Public Schools but did not provide details regarding her intentions for the upcoming school year. Gillach has been a part of the Grand Forks district since 2012, initially serving as the principal of Schroeder Middle School before ascending to the associate superintendent role in 2018.
In a statement, Melissa Bakke, Communications and Marketing Manager for Grand Forks Public Schools, indicated that Gillach remains under contract and will continue to contribute to the district. “Catherine’s decision to withdraw from the Hawley position reflects her careful consideration of what’s best for her and her professional path,” Bakke noted. “We respect her choice and are glad she’ll continue contributing her leadership within Grand Forks Public Schools.”
Gillach was selected for the Hawley superintendent position following multiple rounds of interviews, with the Hawley School Board voting unanimously in her favor. Current Hawley Superintendent Phil Jensen confirmed that Gillach never signed an official contract. He added that negotiations were ongoing at the time she withdrew her acceptance. Following her decision, the Hawley School District has reopened the search for a new superintendent, with applications being accepted until January 12, 2024.
Gillach’s withdrawal highlights the challenges faced by educators in balancing professional aspirations with personal commitments. Her continued leadership at Grand Forks Public Schools will be crucial as the district navigates the upcoming academic year.
