Windham School Rescinds Secure Status After False Alarm

UPDATE: The situation at Manchester Elementary School in Windham has been resolved following a brief lockdown due to a false alarm. Earlier today, October 17, 2023, the school was placed in a “secure status” after reports of a suspicious person in the vicinity.

According to RSU 14 Superintendent Christopher Howell, the secure status involved locking all doors and restricting visitor access. Despite the heightened alert, classes and activities continued as normal within the school.

By early afternoon, Howell confirmed that the situation was safely addressed. The individual reported as suspicious turned out to be an employee at a nearby local business, posing no threat to the school, as they did not possess a weapon or make any threats.

Howell commended the community member who reported the suspicious sighting, stating, “They did the right thing.” This emphasizes the importance of vigilance and community involvement in ensuring student safety.

As of now, the school has returned to normal operations, and parents have been notified. Authorities are encouraging continued community awareness and communication as a vital part of maintaining safety in the area.
