Jack Allen Samuelson, 91, Iconic Santa Cruz Figure, Passes Away

UPDATE: Jack Allen Samuelson, a beloved figure in the Santa Cruz community, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2025, at the age of 91. Surrounded by family at his cherished home overlooking Santa Cruz, he was just a month shy of his 92nd birthday.

Samuelson was born on January 14, 1934, in Santa Cruz, at the historic “Old Dominican” hospital. As a lifelong resident, he was deeply rooted in the community, attending local schools and graduating from Santa Cruz High School in 1952. His journey continued in the U.S. Army, where he served overseas before pursuing higher education under the GI Bill at San Jose State University.

Throughout his impressive 35-year career at Lockheed Missiles & Space, Samuelson was known for his technical writing and later held a supervisory position in Industrial Relations. His passion for family and community remained evident as he dedicated his time to local clubs, including the Santa Cruz Elks and the Santa Cruz Native Sons.

Samuelson’s love for adventure was matched only by his passion for golf. A regular at Delaveaga Golf Course, he became a local legend, sharing his expertise with family and friends. His grandsons, Scott, Ryan, and Tyler, cherished these moments, learning the game from their grandfather.

Beyond golf, Samuelson embraced life with zeal, enjoying fast cars, ocean clamming, and diving. His culinary skills shone through as he introduced his children to the joys of freshly caught seafood, creating lasting family memories around the dinner table. He was also known for his culinary expertise, particularly his quest for the ultimate clam chowder recipe, which earned him invitations to judge at the annual Clam Chowder Cook-off at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.

Samuelson is survived by his two children, Julie Walls and Mark Samuelson, as well as stepchildren and grandchildren, all of whom he supported through every milestone. He was a devoted family man, celebrated for his thoughtful presence at graduations, birthdays, and family gatherings.

In his final months, Samuelson received exemplary care from a dedicated team, including Dr. Chris Bernardi and hospice staff. His family expresses deep gratitude for their support during this challenging time.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Hospice of Santa Cruz County in Jack’s memory. A private celebration of his life is planned for Spring 2026.

Jack Allen Samuelson will be remembered not just for his achievements, but for his kind spirit and the lasting impact he made on everyone around him.
