Holiday Train Show Opens at NYBG Featuring Mini Brooklyn Bridge

UPDATE: The highly anticipated Holiday Train Show at the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) is now open, showcasing a stunning miniature replica of the iconic Brooklyn Bridge and other beloved NYC landmarks. This year’s exhibit runs through January 11, 2024, and promises an immersive experience for visitors of all ages.

Kenia Pittman, director of exhibition design operations at NYBG, emphasized the significance of the Brooklyn Bridge in the exhibit. “The Brooklyn Bridge is the largest bridge in the Holiday Train Show,” she stated during a guided tour. This captivating model, constructed from natural materials, has been part of the show since 2004 and stands as a tribute to the original structure’s grandeur.

The real Brooklyn Bridge spans the East River, connecting Brooklyn and Manhattan, and opened on May 24, 1884, after years of construction. Designed by John A. Roebling, the bridge remains a symbol of architectural achievement and resilience. Visitors can marvel at the intricacies of the miniature bridge made from oak, elm, and willow twigs, highlighting the creativity that has gone into this year’s display.

This year’s train show features over 30 G-scale model locomotives and nearly 200 plant-based replicas of famous New York City architecture. The stunning artistry of these models, constructed by Applied Imagination, utilizes leaves, twigs, and other natural materials to create a breathtaking urban landscape. “They use natural materials gathered from nearby woods,” Pittman explained, highlighting the environmental consciousness of the exhibit.

The Holiday Train Show is not just about trains; the surrounding miniature buildings are often the true stars. From the Statue of Liberty to Rockefeller Center, the detailed structures invite visitors to explore the essence of New York City. This year, new additions include the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Delacorte Theater, crafted meticulously to reflect their real-life counterparts.

In addition to the enchanting displays, the Garden will host special activities, including a sensory-friendly morning on January 3, 2024, from 9 to 11 a.m., where families can enjoy treats and holiday spirit. The festive atmosphere continues with the “Evergreen Express” in the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden, offering a variety of engaging experiences through interactive story trails and toy trains.

For those eager to experience the magic at night, the Holiday Train Show will also feature a special “After Dark” event on January 10, 2024. The buildings, many of which light up, create a mesmerizing cityscape that captivates visitors long after the sun sets.

Tickets for the Holiday Train Show start at $25 and can be purchased via the NYBG website. The event promises not only a visual feast but also a chance to connect with the rich cultural and architectural heritage of New York City.

With the Holiday Train Show now open, visitors are encouraged to come witness this unique blend of art, nature, and holiday cheer. Experience the joy of NYC’s landmarks in miniature form and be inspired to create your own masterpieces with nature’s bounty. As Pittman remarked, “There’s no wrong way to create your own take on a favorite New York City landmark.”
