Penn State Retains Justin Lustig as Special Teams Coordinator

UPDATE: Penn State football coach Matt Campbell has just announced that special teams coordinator Justin Lustig will remain with the Nittany Lions, a decision confirmed by Daniel Gallen of Lions 247. This move solidifies Lustig’s position following an impressive second season, during which kicker Ryan Barker achieved a remarkable 94.7% success rate, converting 18 of 19 field goal attempts.

Lustig’s impact on the team has been profound. Under his guidance, Barker’s overall performance has been historic, with a two-year total of 33 successful field goals out of 37 attempts, marking an 89.2% success rate—the best in Penn State history. Additionally, punter Gabe Nwosu set a school record with a 46.1 yards per punt average, contributing to the Lions ranking 12th nationally in net punting. Notably, Nwosu earned a spot on the All-Big Ten third team, while Barker, long snapper Tyler Duzansky, and kick returner Nick Singleton received honorable mentions.

As the coaching staff develops, it appears that former Penn State defensive back D’Anton Lynn is set to join as the new defensive coordinator. Lynn, who has been serving as the defensive coordinator for USC, was expected to remain with the Trojans for the Alamo Bowl on Tuesday night, which ended in a 30-27 overtime loss. Reports indicate that Lynn will not attend the game due to a mutual agreement with coach Lincoln Riley, as he has accepted the position at Penn State.

In a significant boost for the roster, offensive linemen Anthony Donkoh and Cooper Cousins, along with tight end Andrew Rappleyea, have announced their decision to stay with the Lions, opting not to enter the transfer portal. Donkoh started in all but two games this season, while Cousins made 12 appearances, contributing significantly during pivotal games. Rappleyea added value with 20 receptions for 180 yards and 3 touchdowns, including a crucial score in the Pinstripe Bowl victory against Clemson.

As of Wednesday morning, the transfer portal opens, and nine Penn State players have indicated their intention to enter, including defensive ends Chaz Coleman and Daniel Jennings, cornerbacks A.J. Harris and Elliot Washington II, and others. This dynamic situation underscores the ongoing changes at Penn State as they prepare for the next season.

Stay tuned for more updates as the Nittany Lions finalize their coaching staff and roster ahead of the upcoming challenges.
