West Contra Costa’s Gioia Announces Chief of Staff Transition

BREAKING: West Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia has just announced a significant leadership transition as Sonia Bustamante steps down as his chief of staff after 10 years of dedicated service. Bustamante will depart on January 3, 2024, to take on a new role directing the SAFE Center/Centro SAFE, part of the Immigrant Action Network, aimed at supporting the Bay Area’s immigrant community.

This change is crucial for the community as Bustamante has played a pivotal role in advancing policies that promote equity and inclusion in West Contra Costa County. Under her leadership, Gioia’s office launched the Office of Racial Equity and Social Justice and introduced critical programs like Contra Costa Cares, which provides health care to immigrants, and Stand Together Contra Costa, aimed at protecting those at risk of deportation.

Gioia expressed gratitude for Bustamante’s impactful leadership, stating that her vision has transformed the lives of countless residents. “Sonia’s commitment to the community has been instrumental in advancing our goals,” he emphasized in a public statement.

Taking over the reins as chief of staff is Robert Rogers, a seasoned member of Gioia’s team for the past 10 years. Gioia praised Rogers for his extensive experience and strong relationships within the community. “I am confident that Robert will lead our office with integrity and purpose, continuing to serve the needs of West Contra Costa County effectively,” he stated.

Bustamante’s new position at the SAFE Center comes with a notable $5 million in seed funding from Contra Costa County, aiming to connect immigrant families with essential services. This initiative will play a vital role in enhancing support for the immigrant community, ensuring they receive access to necessary health and social services.

As the transition unfolds, residents and stakeholders are encouraged to reflect on the significant contributions made by Bustamante and to welcome Rogers in his new role. This leadership change is expected to influence ongoing initiatives aimed at advancing social justice and equity in the district.
