The Pro Football Hall of Fame has announced its 15 modern-era finalists for the class of 2026, highlighting notable names such as Drew Brees, Larry Fitzgerald, and Frank Gore. The announcement, made on December 30, 2023, showcases a prestigious group of athletes who have left significant marks on the sport.
Joining Brees, Fitzgerald, and Gore are a mix of former stars, including Willie Anderson, Jahri Evans, Torry Holt, Luke Kuechly, Eli Manning, Terrell Suggs, Adam Vinatieri, Reggie Wayne, Kevin Williams, Jason Witten, Darren Woodson, and Marshal Yanda. These athletes were selected from a pool of 26 semifinalists, which was announced on November 25, following an extensive review process that began with 128 nominees.
The selection committee will meet to determine the inductees for the upcoming class. The finalists will be officially revealed on February 5, 2024, during the NFL Honors ceremony in San Francisco. The committee is permitted to elect up to five modern-era players, with each requiring a minimum of 80% of votes for induction.
Notably absent from the finalists list are several prominent players who did not progress from the semifinalist stage. Philip Rivers, who recently returned from retirement to join the Indianapolis Colts, alongside former Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith Sr., Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward, and Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas, were among those snubbed this year.
In addition to the modern-era candidates, the Hall of Fame has finalists in the seniors category, which includes New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, former Patriots coach Bill Belichick, Kenny Anderson, Roger Craig, and L.C. Greenwood. Voting for this group is conducted separately, with at least one candidate required to be elected. The bylaws allow for a maximum of three seniors to be inducted.
The journey to the Hall of Fame is rigorous, and this year’s class of 15 finalists represents the pinnacle of achievement in professional football. As fans and analysts await the official announcement, the spotlight remains on these remarkable athletes who have set standards of excellence in the game.
