Holiday DUI Arrest Surge: 8 Charged in Nez Perce County

UPDATE: Over the holiday weekend, law enforcement in Nez Perce County reported a significant rise in DUI arrests, with eight individuals booked on charges of driving under the influence during the five-day period from December 24 to December 28.

In Clarkston alone, four people faced DUI charges, prompting Police Chief Josh Daniel to express concern over the uptick. “It was a pretty busy holiday weekend for DUI arrests,” Daniel stated. “It seemed to be a little more this year than in previous years.” With New Year’s Eve approaching, Clarkston’s police force will be fully staffed to address potential issues.

The numbers reveal that 17 total arrests occurred in Nez Perce County over the holiday, meaning that more than half were related to DUI offenses. Specifically, two arrests were made on Christmas Eve, while the remaining six were dispersed throughout the following days.

While Lewiston Police did not provide comment, they confirmed making two DUI arrests. Additionally, the Idaho State Police reported two more DUI arrests, as Nez Perce County deputies accounted for four of the total DUI incidents.

In Clarkston, the police tracked patterns in DUI occurrences, especially in busy areas. “We see the most amount of traffic on the north end of town, near the (Interstate) Blue Bridge, and by Costco and Walmart,” Daniel noted. The Clarkston Police reported a grand total of 14 arrests during the holiday, with DUIs recorded on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and throughout the weekend.

The remaining 10 arrests in Nez Perce County included individuals charged with outstanding warrants, a restraining order violation, unlawful entry, and resisting arrest.

Police Chief Daniel urged partygoers to prioritize safety as New Year’s celebrations approach, encouraging responsible drinking and the use of designated drivers. “I hope people drink responsibly and take up offers of free rides,” he emphasized.

As the holiday season continues, authorities remain vigilant on the roads, aiming to prevent further incidents. Stay tuned for updates as the situation develops.
