Williams Coach Kevin App Celebrates Historic 200th Win Today

UPDATE: Kevin App, head coach of the Williams College men’s basketball team, has just reached a significant milestone: his 200th career win. This achievement marks him as only the second coach in the history of Williams men’s basketball to hit this landmark, following the legendary Harry Sheehy.

The milestone victory was secured on December 20, 2023, during the second game of the Daytona Beach Shootout, where the Ephs narrowly defeated Carleton College with a score of 73-71. “It was a fun way to cap off the trip,” App said from his home in Williamstown, reflecting on the achievement.

The game took place in sunny Daytona Beach, Florida, and App’s journey to this milestone has spanned over 11 years with the Ephs, bringing his record to an impressive 200-83. The excitement was palpable among the team, especially for first-year guard Khalil Carlson, who described the moment as “awesome.” He added, “We didn’t know it until we got back to the locker room. Obviously, we had to shower him with water. It was really special to celebrate.”

App, whose coaching career includes the 100th win celebrated on November 15, 2019, has consistently focused on developing his players and fostering a strong team environment. “You surround yourself with good people and good players, and the wins take care of themselves,” he noted.

As App reflects on his coaching journey, he stands out among his peers in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), where he is now the fourth-longest tenured coach. The Ephs are set to return home after the holiday break to prepare for a matchup against Worcester State on January 3 at Chandler Gym.

The emotional weight of this victory is not lost on App, who acknowledged that while he was aware of the milestone, his focus remains on the day-to-day challenges of coaching. “Most coaches are locked into whatever that day brings,” he explained.

As Williams celebrates this achievement, App’s focus on teamwork and development promises a bright future for the Ephs. Fans and alumni are encouraged to share their congratulations and support for App as he embarks on the next chapter of his coaching career.
