URGENT UPDATE: Austin officials have just announced critical changes to the trash pickup schedule during the upcoming holiday season, impacting many households across the city. Curbside trash collection will see significant shifts on December 24, December 25, and January 1, 2026, as city offices close for the holidays.
In a bid to maintain essential services, the City of Austin will keep core operations running, including trash pickup and utility payment processing. However, residents should note that Thursday and Friday collection routes will be adjusted: pickups originally scheduled for Thursday will now occur on Friday, and Friday pickups will shift to Saturday. This means that Monday through Wednesday collections will continue as planned, but households must prepare for these changes on the holiday.
Residents can easily confirm their specific pickup day through the Austin Recycles app or by visiting austintexas.gov/myschedule.
In addition to trash collection adjustments, the Recycle and Reuse Drop-off Center will be closed on December 24, December 25, and January 1. Austin Water’s Hornsby Bend Biosolids Management Plant will also not accept yard trimmings or large brush drop-offs on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
Many are asking, “Can I pay my utility bill on Christmas?” The good news is that utility payments will still be processed during the holiday closures. Customers can conveniently pay online at coautilities.com or by calling 1-833-375-4949. In-person payments will also be accepted at various locations, including H-E-B, CVS, Randalls, and Walmart.
For those looking to enjoy outdoor activities, most city parks will remain open; however, Zilker Park’s Great Lawn will be closed. Golf courses will offer services on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day, with final Golf ATX reservations available until 10 a.m. on December 24. Notably, Barton Springs Pool will be open for visitors, although it will operate without lifeguards.
As the holiday approaches, residents are encouraged to make note of these vital changes to ensure a smooth holiday experience. With the new trash pickup schedule, utility payment options, and park access information, Austin officials are committed to providing essential services while allowing the community to celebrate the season.
