CPSC Issues Holiday Safety Warning on E-Scooter Batteries

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a cautionary message regarding the potential hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries found in e-scooters and other electric devices during the holiday season. On December 22, 2023, the agency released a 30-minute video, aptly titled “E-scooter Lithium-Ion Battery Yule Log,” aimed at highlighting the risks these batteries pose as gifts during the festive period.

The CPSC warns that while e-scooters and hoverboards are popular holiday gifts, their lithium-ion batteries can be extremely flammable. These batteries undergo internal chemical reactions that produce flammable gases, which can sustain a fire for extended periods. In fact, the CPSC noted that extinguishing a fire from an electric vehicle can require over 30,000 gallons of water, underscoring the severity of the risk involved.

In its advisory post, the CPSC emphasized the importance of purchasing such devices from reputable retailers. It also urged consumers to follow manufacturer instructions when charging batteries. “Never charge your batteries overnight, and only use approved replacement batteries,” the CPSC stated, advising caution with these increasingly common electronic gifts.

Fire Safety Tips for the Holidays

In addition to concerns regarding e-scooter batteries, the CPSC highlighted that holiday decorations, particularly Christmas trees, can also pose a fire hazard. A video released on December 20 demonstrated the stark difference in how flames spread in a dry versus a well-watered tree. A dry Christmas tree can ignite in seconds, turning into a serious fire risk, while a hydrated tree burns much more slowly, providing critical extra time for a safe response.

The CPSC’s message is clear: understanding the risks associated with holiday gifts and decorations could be vital for safety. They encapsulated this advice with a memorable metaphor, stating, “You wouldn’t gift your children an enchanted scorpion, so don’t gift them complicated and potentially dangerous presents.”

As families prepare for the holiday season, being aware of these fire hazards can help prevent tragedies. The CPSC’s engaging approach aims to make safety information stick in the minds of consumers, reminding everyone to prioritize safety amid their holiday celebrations.
