UPDATE: A Livonia baker is taking immediate action to support families struggling with recent SNAP benefit changes. Hassan Makki, the owner of Sweet 220 Bakery, has launched a free food pantry at his bakery to assist those in need during the holiday season.
Makki’s initiative comes as many families in Metro Detroit face food insecurity due to reduced SNAP benefits. “One of the most beautiful things about our culture is the hospitality and giving back,” Makki stated. “I was raised to give back, even if we grew up with very little.”
The pantry, stocked with essentials like rice, beans, pasta, peanut butter, oats, canned goods, and fresh produce, is open to all visitors. “Everything over here is free,” Makki emphasized during a recent visit, highlighting the community support that helps sustain this effort.
Local residents, including Ramia Elhussaini and Teresa Morris, have praised the pantry’s impact. Morris remarked, “Especially with everything that’s going on with the SNAP benefits, this is just a great opportunity for people to come in and grab things that they may need.”
This generous act is not new for Makki. Earlier in 2023, he delivered treats to line workers and first responders during a major power outage in the area. His commitment to helping others extends further this holiday season, as he plans to adopt three families to provide them with holiday desserts.
Nominations for families in need have already begun pouring in, many of which have moved Makki to tears. One submission detailed a single mother who recently lost her brother and is struggling to care for her three adopted children. “I’m still grieving, and days when I can’t sleep, it would be nice to have a sweet treat to brighten my mood,” the letter read.
“I’ve been through family hardship and loss, and it’s hard to read them,” Makki said, reflecting on the emotional toll of such stories. “Especially when you go home, you know, the heat is on, the fridge is full of food.”
The food pantry operates year-round, but Makki hopes to expand its offerings with more community support. Families can be nominated for holiday treats through Sweet 220 Bakery’s Instagram page @sweet220.
This heartfelt initiative is not just a local story; it embodies the spirit of giving that resonates across communities, especially in challenging times. With the holiday season upon us, Makki’s efforts are a reminder of the power of kindness and community support.
