Oscar Smith High School celebrated significant achievements in Virginia’s high school football scene as senior wide receiver Travis Johnson was named the Virginia High School League (VHSL) state Class 6 Offensive Player of the Year. Under the leadership of head coach Chris Scott, the Tigers secured their second consecutive title and fourth during Scott’s tenure.
In his standout season, Johnson, who has committed to play for the University of Michigan, recorded impressive statistics that included catching 56 passes for 1,157 yards and scoring 15 touchdowns. This marked his second consecutive year earning all-state recognition. Johnson’s exceptional performance was complemented by six other teammates who also made the first-team selection, showcasing the depth of talent within the Oscar Smith program.
Joining Johnson on the first team were junior quarterback Lonnie Andrews, senior offensive lineman Dory Wilson, sophomore defensive lineman Lincoln Halliday, senior linebacker Malachi White, senior defensive back Jayden Covil, senior punt returner Quali Price, and senior all-purpose player Na’Rod Jarvis. Additionally, the second team recognized senior tight end Charles McGlown and Jarvis as a linebacker, further highlighting the program’s success this season.
The Tigers demonstrated their prowess on the field by defeating Indian River with a score of 33-20 on September 20, 2025, at Oscar Smith High School located in Chesapeake, Virginia. Under Scott’s guidance, the team has not only achieved remarkable victories but has also developed players into top contenders at the state level.
In college football news, Old Dominion University is experiencing shifts in its roster as starting tight end Jailen Butler plans to enter the transfer portal, according to a representative who spoke to On3 Sports. Butler, standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 245 pounds, has made 21 starts and recorded 18 career receptions for 103 yards and one touchdown. He joins quarterback Colton Joseph and running back Trequan Jones in exploring transfer options.
Conversely, Old Dominion has welcomed a new addition to its roster, securing a commitment from running back Hunter Patterson, who is transferring from Division II West Liberty. Patterson had an impressive season, rushing for 1,219 yards and scoring 17 touchdowns on 174 carries, while also catching 33 passes for 418 yards and three touchdowns.
In women’s college soccer, two players from Christopher Newport University have earned the prestigious Scholar All-Region honors. Senior midfielder Hanna Heaton from Gloucester and junior goalkeeper Amy Sidaway were recognized among ten players for their academic and athletic achievements. Heaton has received this distinction for the second consecutive year, marking a significant accomplishment for both players and the program.
The recognition of Heaton and Sidaway extends Christopher Newport’s record streak to eight consecutive years with at least one player acknowledged for both academic excellence and athletic performance. The Scholar All-Region award is presented to players who are juniors or above, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.40, and participate in a minimum of 75% of their team’s games.
