Retiring Deputy DA Stephanie Wills Honored in Emotional Ceremony

UPDATE: In a heartfelt ceremony held on Thursday, January 4, 2024, retiring Deputy District Attorney Stephanie Wills was honored for her remarkable 30-year career with the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office. The event packed Courtroom 4 to standing capacity, reflecting the profound impact Wills has had on her colleagues and the community.

Outgoing District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer and incoming DA Tanner Rouse presented Wills with a commemorative plaque, highlighting her legacy as an exceptional prosecutor and mentor. Stollsteimer, who recently won a seat on the Court of Common Pleas, expressed his disbelief at her departure, stating, “It’s hard for me to even imagine what this office is going to be like without her.”

Rouse, who has worked alongside Wills for six years, described her as a “legendary attorney” whose wisdom and professionalism will be sorely missed. He shared how Wills was a guiding star during challenging times, including navigating the complexities of the COVID-19 pandemic. “Without her counsel, I would very simply have been lost,” he said.

Wills began her journey in the DA’s office as an intern in 1994 and has since held various roles, culminating in her position as Deputy District Attorney. Reflecting on her career, Wills stated, “I have loved being a DA. I knew from the very first minute that I sat at a counsel table… this was what I was meant to do.”

Throughout her tenure, Wills has been involved in high-profile cases, including homicides, demonstrating her commitment to justice. “I think I got assigned my first homicide in 2000 and I loved it. Those were the cases where there’s more evidence, everybody took it seriously,” she recalled, emphasizing the importance of her work in securing justice for victims and their families.

Wills’ retirement marks the end of an era for the Delaware County DA’s office, with colleagues reflecting on her influence and the void her absence will create. She plans to spend more time with her family and has not ruled out returning to practice in the future.

As Wills embarks on this new chapter, the legal community and the families she served will undoubtedly feel the impact of her departure. Her legacy as a dedicated public servant will resonate for years to come.
