UPDATE: The small town of Stewartville, Minnesota is reeling from a devastating shooting incident that occurred early on December 12, 2023, outside Stewartville High School. The tragedy has left one student dead and another in critical condition, prompting an urgent community response.
Around 5 a.m. last Friday, as the school’s wrestling team prepared for a trip to Grand Forks, North Dakota, gunfire erupted in the parking lot. Landon Hay, a student and witness to the event, expressed the shock felt throughout the community. “We were all in disbelief,” Hay stated. “It took me a couple of hours to actually process what had happened.”
By Monday, the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that 19-year-old Logan Moyer had died from an apparent suicide, while another individual remains in critical but stable condition. The incident has left a profound impact on two families and the entire community of Stewartville.
In response to the tragedy, a candlelight vigil was held less than a week later, bringing together approximately 50 community members to honor the lives affected. The vigil took place outside C&M Printing, Embroidery & Tanning, located next to U.S. Highway 63, where participants gathered in the cold to support one another.
Organizers Charles and CarolAnn Jackson chose not to hold the vigil at the school to preserve its sanctity. “I thought it was important for it to not be at the school, to respect that space,” CarolAnn explained. “But I also knew we had to do something.”
During the vigil, prayers were offered, including heartfelt words for Moyer’s family and the injured student. A song played, echoing sentiments of support and love. As the microphone was opened for community members to speak, a single voice began reciting The Lord’s Prayer, soon joined by many in unison.
As the community processes this traumatic event, support systems are in place for students returning to school. “We had an entire school staff of support behind us,” Hay noted, highlighting the presence of teachers, counselors, and even therapy dogs in the halls.
This tragic shooting will leave an indelible mark on Stewartville, and the community is determined to come together to heal. The next steps involve not only mourning the loss but also ensuring that families receive the necessary support during this difficult time.
