UPDATE: Salt Lake County has officially launched its new sustainability initiative, dubbed ‘Green Vision’, designed to unify cross-departmental efforts toward energy conservation and environmental responsibility. During an inaugural recognition ceremony held on Tuesday, County Mayor Jenny Wilson awarded 10 awards to various departments for their commitment to sustainability.
This initiative comes at a critical time as Salt Lake County faces significant environmental challenges, including a shrinking Great Salt Lake and ongoing water shortages. Wilson stated, “We want our county employees to understand Green Vision, and that just means we at Salt Lake County have a value of saving money for our taxpayers and also doing what’s right for the environment.”
The awards ceremony highlighted groundbreaking projects like ‘Flip the Strip’, which transformed 160,930 square feet of traditional turf park strips into water-efficient landscapes. This effort not only reduces water consumption but also supports the county’s long-term drought resilience plans. The collaborative work showcased by the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Mountain America Expo Center, and several other agencies exemplifies the spirit of this initiative.
Mayor Wilson emphasized the importance of accountability, saying, “I am one of the people that gets a phone call when I say, ‘Hey, county, can we cut back on our water use?'” She continued, “And then somebody’s driving along and sprinklers are running in the middle of the night…” Her statement underscores the county’s commitment to lead by example in environmental stewardship.
The ceremony also recognized additional honorees, including the Achievement in Water award presented to Salt Lake County Arts and Culture for its efforts surrounding the Great Salt Lake. Wilson’s remarks and the awards serve as a rallying cry for all county employees to prioritize sustainability in their work.
