IMSA’s Lota Onwuameze Shines with 17 Points in Victory

UPDATE: Lota Onwuameze dominated the court as Illinois Math & Science Academy (IMSA) triumphed over St. Edward with a decisive score of 51-32 in Elgin on December 15, 2025. The junior forward showcased his skills, contributing 17 points and 11 rebounds, proving once again that he is a pivotal player in IMSA’s pursuit of a historic season.

Onwuameze, a formidable 6-foot-4 athlete from Springfield, is not just focused on individual accolades. “I think I bring our team together in a way,” he said, emphasizing his role in fostering teamwork and collaboration. His efforts have been instrumental in helping IMSA (now 6-4) build a legacy that could mark this season as one of their best in history.

In the game on Monday night, IMSA stormed out of the gate with an impressive 21-1 lead after the first quarter, overwhelming St. Edward (4-5) right from the start. Onwuameze’s performance included two blocked shots and two steals, reaffirming his status as a dual threat on both ends of the court.

Omar Njikam, a 6-foot-5 senior forward, also shone brightly, adding a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Meanwhile, Neil Sitapara contributed with 12 points, all from three-pointers, showcasing the team’s versatility and depth.

IMSA’s coach, Brad Snead, lauded Onwuameze’s skills, stating, “Lota is solid. He uses his body very well and is very skilled at his post work.” His consistent performance, averaging 18 points and 10 rebounds this season, has made him a cornerstone of the team.

Onwuameze’s journey in basketball began at a young age, inspired by a friend who introduced him to the game. Despite the challenges he faced, including leaving friends behind to pursue his passion, he remains dedicated to his growth and teamwork. “This team has a ton of potential. We just need to bring it out,” he remarked.

The Titans’ ability to gel as a unit is crucial, especially as they face limitations during summer breaks when players scatter across the state. Nonetheless, their commitment to improvement remains strong.

As the season progresses, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if Onwuameze can lead IMSA to new heights. With his track record and the team’s current momentum, the potential for a historic season is palpable.
