Philadelphia Ballet Enchants Audiences with Balanchine’s “The Nutcracker”

The Philadelphia Ballet is captivating audiences this holiday season with its production of George Balanchine’s “The Nutcracker,” which runs through December 31 at the historic Academy of Music. Artistic Director Angel Corella describes the beloved ballet as “a beautiful fairy tale” that embodies the spirit of Christmas.

The performance features approximately 80 dancers, including both professionals and students from the ballet school. Corella emphasized the rewarding journey of young dancers, noting that the first act prominently showcases children. “The first act mainly is the kids,” he explained. “And how they grow into being principal dancers, or doing the principal part, it’s quite rewarding.”

The enchanting story begins with a Christmas party where a young girl named Marie receives a magical nutcracker from her Uncle Drosselmeyer. After her brother, Fritz, accidentally breaks the toy, Marie is devastated. Her uncle repairs the nutcracker, leading her to dream of a fantastical adventure. “She falls asleep with the Nutcracker,” Corella said, “and when she opens her eyes, everything is gigantic, including mice who attack her.”

In this dreamlike state, the Nutcracker comes to life and battles the Mouse King to protect Marie. Together, they journey through a snowy forest, a scene Corella describes as “most people’s favorite.” He remarked on its beauty, calling it “the perfect vision of the holidays.”

The narrative then transports audiences to the Land of Sweets, where the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier perform for Marie and the Nutcracker. The second act primarily showcases the professional company, with various countries represented through dance and Tchaikovsky’s iconic score.

Corella highlights the overall visual and emotional impact of the production, stating, “The sets, the costumes, the dancing is so spectacular. ‘The Nutcracker’ is a holiday tradition not to be missed.”

Performances of George Balanchine’s “The Nutcracker” are taking place at the Academy of Music, located at 240 S. Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19102. For those interested in attending, tickets are available through the Philadelphia Ballet’s official website.
