Franklin G. Schappell, 91, Passes Away; Funeral Services Set

BREAKING: Franklin G. Schappell, a beloved member of the Perry Township community, has passed away at the age of 91. His death occurred on December 19, 2025, just days before his scheduled funeral.

Franklin, the husband of the late Ruth G. (Reppert) Schappell, who died on July 31, 2019, was a dedicated family man, survived by three sons, three daughters, 12 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. He was a lifelong resident of Perry Township, born to James and Edna (Sunday) Schappell.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, Franklin served his country proudly and later worked for many years at Berks Packing, where he operated a chopper and contributed to making iconic Berks Hot Dogs. He retired in 1996 after a long and fulfilling career.

Franklin was known for his love of the outdoors, often indulging in activities such as hunting, farming, and gardening. His steadfast faith was evident in his dedication to reading the Bible and caring for Zion’s Cemetery, where he assisted with maintenance for many years.

Funeral services are set for Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at 11:00 AM, at Zion’s Church, located at 770 Zion Church Road, Hamburg, PA 19526. A viewing will be held at the church from 10:00 to 11:00 AM prior to the service. Following the service, he will be laid to rest in Zion’s Cemetery.

Franklin leaves behind a legacy of love and commitment, remembered fondly by family and friends. His passing is a significant loss to the community, which he served with unwavering dedication.
