THIS WEEK’S HIGHLIGHTS: On Saturday, December 9, two of the state’s top-ranked boys teams, Woodbridge and St. Joseph, face off in a highly anticipated duel in North Brunswick, NJ. This match marks the first of two regular season encounters in the Greater Middlesex Conference Red Division. Last season, Woodbridge handed St. Joseph its only dual match loss in three years during the GMC Team Tournament finals. Recently, Woodbridge triumphed at the Marisa Tufaro Classic, defeating St. Joseph with a three-game total of 3,158 to 3,069. Notably, St. Joseph’s Kai Strothers rolled a perfect game of 300 during the tournament, finishing with a high series of 773.
On the girls’ side, an exciting clash is brewing as Gloucester Tech and Eastern, both boasting undefeated records at 2-0, prepare for an early-season showdown. Eastern’s senior Eva Carr leads with a 177 average, while Gloucester Tech’s Annabelle Carter impresses with a stellar 207 average, including a high game of 254.
In another must-watch match, Montville takes on Kinnelon in their first dual of the season. Montville’s senior Jake Schneider is off to a hot start, achieving a high game of 243 and a high series of 713 in a recent victory over Madison. Kinnelon, coming off a win against Chatham, will rely on senior Zak Kessler, who rolled a high game of 276.
The defending Group 2 champions face a formidable challenge when they meet last year’s HCIAL champions, Bayonne, who secured a fifth-place finish at the Marisa Tufaro Classic. This contest will be pivotal in determining the early landscape of the season.
SOUTH JERSEY SHOWDOWNS: In a thrilling girls matchup, Seneca, led by senior Tatum Walsh, who recorded 537 in her first dual match, will compete against Cherry Hill East and its standout Leanna Lescano, who boasts a 198 average.
The premier squads in Essex County, Seton Hall Prep and West Orange, will also meet this week. Both teams have won their opening two matches, with Seton Hall’s Joey Maiella averaging 212 and West Orange’s Alexander Kranz averaging 198.
Additionally, watch for freshman Giana Gonzales from Woodbridge, who is making waves with a 171 average over three matches. Meanwhile, South Brunswick, featuring junior Emily Cochran and senior Aliya Ahmad, starts their season strong with a 4-0 victory over Woodbridge.
The rivalry between Brick Township and Brick Memorial reignites this season as Brick Township seeks to maintain momentum after last year’s win. Senior Addison Gerhard leads the Dragons, who are currently 3-0, while Brick Memorial’s Bryonna Camp shines with a 198 average.
Lastly, don’t miss the 24th Annual Bowling Extravaganza hosted by Westfield on Saturday at Jersey Lanes in Linden, where top teams from the N.J. boys and girls bowling community will compete. Last year, St. Joseph claimed victory with a team total of 3,233 pins.
