BREAKING NEWS: Netflix confirms development on a sequel to The Mitchells vs. the Machines, but it will proceed without original co-director Jeff Rowe. In a recent interview, Rowe revealed that his commitments to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise prevent him from returning to the beloved animated series.
Originally released in April 2021, The Mitchells vs. the Machines became a major success for Netflix, earning a stellar 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and breaking records as the streamer’s most-watched animated title at the time. The film follows a Michigan family on a cross-country road trip that turns chaotic when a global AI apocalypse strikes.
While fans may be disappointed by Rowe’s absence, Netflix is determined to maintain the momentum of their animation slate. Key figures from the first film will return, ensuring that the sequel remains in good hands. Rowe noted, “Guillermo [Martinez]…is one of the funniest, warmest, best storytellers. I’m excited to see what happens.”
Martinez will co-direct the sequel alongside JP Sans. The talented Molyneux sisters from Bob’s Burgers are on board as writers, promising a continuation of the franchise’s unique humor and heart. Producers Mike Rianda, Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Kurt Albrecht are also involved, ensuring a strong creative lineage.
Rowe’s shift to focus on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, particularly following his successful directorial debut with 2023’s Mutant Mayhem, has led to a multi-year first-look deal with Paramount Animation. His commitment to the Turtles means he is currently engrossed in multiple projects, including the forthcoming Chrome Alone 2 short film and a sequel to Mutant Mayhem, which is set for release in September 2027.
Animation productions require significant time and effort, making Rowe’s dual commitments logistically challenging. However, Netflix, in partnership with Sony Pictures Animation, is committed to enhancing its animated offerings. Following the success of KPop Demon Hunters, which recently eclipsed The Mitchells vs. the Machines as Netflix’s biggest animated hit, the anticipation for new content remains high.
As the sequel gears up for production, fans can expect a release date announcement soon. With a familiar team of creative minds at the helm, the sequel is poised to capture the hearts of audiences once again, despite the notable absence of Rowe.
Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting project!
