Santa Clarita’s Cube Lights Up Holidays with Tree Ceremony

UPDATE: The city of Santa Clarita kicked off the holiday season with an electrifying tree lighting ceremony at The Cube Ice and Entertainment Center on December 5, 2025. Mayor Bill Miranda transformed into a hockey player for the night, scoring a glowing puck into the goal as part of the festive celebration, marking the fifth annual event that brought the community together.

As lights flickered to life, illuminating a grand Christmas tree at the center of the rink, the excitement was palpable among the crowd of families. “3… 2… 1!” shouted attendees, and with a swift motion, the puck glided across the ice to kick off the festivities. This ceremony not only heralded the holiday spirit but also celebrated another successful year for The Cube, which has become an essential hub for the Santa Clarita Valley community.

Just five years ago, The Cube faced closure. After being privately owned for two decades, it was purchased by the city for $14.95 million in March 2020 following community-driven efforts to “Save the Rink.” A study had shown it was the second most utilized venue in the area, underscoring its significance to local residents.

“It’s a full house here today, and it tells us how critical it was for us to save the ice station that was here and turn it into The Cube,” said Mayor Miranda. The facility now serves diverse organizations, including the UCLA Men’s Hockey Team and SNAP Sports, which offers adaptive sports programs.

The celebration featured special guests, including the Los Angeles Kings mascot, Bailey the Lion, and former NHL player Daryl Evans, who served as master of ceremonies. Attendees also enjoyed a preview of the upcoming Holiday Ice Skating Show titled “A Nutcracker Fantasy,” set to premiere at The Cube.

“This event showcases not just the festive spirit but also the talent of our local skaters,” Miranda remarked. “They pour a lot of work and energy into their skills, and performing under this kind of pressure is impressive.”

Looking ahead, city officials are planning upgrades to enhance The Cube experience. Councilwoman Marsha McLean noted that a Zamboni upgrade is already in the works, with additional plans to install new bleachers and explore multipurpose uses for the facility.

While families enjoyed the ice, some skaters wobbled as they took their first steps, while others glided effortlessly, circling the beautiful Christmas tree. Mayor Miranda took a moment to thank the staff and volunteers who made the event possible, emphasizing the community’s commitment to preserving this beloved venue.

As the city of Santa Clarita continues to invest in The Cube, the message is clear: this community treasure is more than just an ice rink; it is a place where families come together to celebrate, learn, and create memories. The lights are on, the ice is ready, and the holiday season is officially here.
