Texas A&M Volleyball Sweeps Campbell, Prepares for Clash with TCU

Texas A&M volleyball commenced its NCAA Tournament journey with a decisive sweep against the Campbell Camels, winning 3-0 on December 1, 2023. Although the match ended in a clean sweep, the Aggies faced challenges, particularly from Campbell’s service pressure and attacking offense, which pushed Texas A&M to a 25-20 victory in the first set. The Camels managed a total of 23 kills over the final two sets, reflecting their competitive spirit.

After the match, senior outside hitter Logan Lednicky remarked, “It’s not going to be an easy coast the rest of the tournament so being squeezed a little bit there in the first was a good testament to our team.” This victory sets the stage for Texas A&M’s second-round matchup against the TCU Horned Frogs, a team that previously defeated the Aggies in five sets in September.

Building Momentum for the Next Challenge

Looking ahead, head coach Jamie Morrison expressed confidence in his team’s growth since their earlier encounter with TCU. “When I go back and watch that team on scouting, I literally do not recognize that team,” he stated. The upcoming match in Lincoln, Nebraska, promises to be crucial as the winner will secure a spot in the Sweet Sixteen.

The Aggies must maintain their momentum and focus on several key areas as they prepare for TCU. One notable concern from their match against Campbell was the nine service errors committed by Texas A&M. Additionally, the Aggies struggled with receiving serves, which allowed Campbell to score aces. Texas A&M ranked third in the Southeastern Conference in allowing service aces, while TCU is sixth in the Big 12, making efficient serve reception critical for the Aggies in the upcoming match.

Offensive Prowess and Defensive Strength

Texas A&M’s offensive performance against Campbell was marked by efficiency, with Lednicky leading the charge with 18 kills. The team achieved an impressive hitting percentage of .417, setting a postseason record for hitting percentage in a three-set match during the rally-scoring era. Senior outside hitter Emily Hellmuth contributed significantly as well, finishing with 10 kills and showcasing a balanced offense that kept Campbell’s defense on its toes.

Hellmuth noted the importance of team balance in their success, stating, “We talk so much about having a balanced team and I just saw a lot of space tonight.” The Aggies’ clean hitting was evident, as they recorded a season-low four attack errors, a significant improvement from their previous matchup against TCU where they made 24 errors. Morrison highlighted this progress, noting, “To come out and play that clean at the beginning of this, like it’s a good sign of things to come.”

Defensively, Lednicky’s blocking skills were on display, as she registered five total blocks, including one solo block. Texas A&M finished the match with a total of 10 blocks, demonstrating their defensive capabilities. The Aggies are known for their strong blocking, averaging 2.55 blocks per set, making their front row a formidable barrier for TCU’s offense.

As the Aggies prepare for their clash against TCU, their ability to control the match and limit errors will be vital. If they can successfully stifle TCU’s momentum and capitalize on their own offensive strengths, Texas A&M may well secure their place in the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since the 2012-2013 season.
