Memphis is on track to secure a deal for the hiring of Charles Huff as its new football coach, according to sources cited by ESPN’s Pete Thamel. The agreement, which is expected to be finalized on Saturday, will reportedly see Huff sign a five-year contract with the program.
Huff, 42, has established a solid coaching reputation, concluding his first season with the Southern Miss Golden Eagles with a record of 7-5. Before his tenure at Southern Miss, he spent four successful seasons as the head coach at Marshall University, where he led the team to a notable 10-3 record and clinched the Sun Belt Conference title in 2024. Huff’s decision to move to Southern Miss came shortly after the team struggled in the previous season, finishing winless in conference play. In 2025, however, the Golden Eagles improved to a respectable 5-3 record.
Memphis is making this coaching change to replace Ryan Silverfield, who recently accepted the head coaching position at Arkansas. During his tenure with the Memphis Tigers, Silverfield successfully guided the team to bowl eligibility for six consecutive seasons, a significant achievement in the competitive landscape of college football.
Huff’s coaching experience is extensive. He has previously worked as an assistant under well-known coaches such as Nick Saban, James Franklin, Dan Mullen, and P.J. Fleck. This diverse background equips him with a wealth of knowledge and strategies that he will bring to Memphis.
As the Tigers prepare for the upcoming season, the hiring of Huff signals a new chapter for the program. With his proven track record and experience in high-pressure situations, Memphis aims to build on its recent successes and return to prominence in college football.
