In a dramatic incident on the evening of December 5, 2023, law enforcement officers successfully rescued a hostage during a shooting in an apartment located in the 1400 block of 10th Avenue North in Grand Forks. The situation unfolded when a woman contacted emergency dispatch to report that she was holding a man hostage.
According to a report from the Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Office, officers from both the county and the Grand Forks Police Department responded to the scene. They received information indicating exigent circumstances, necessitating immediate entry into the apartment to ensure the safety of the hostage.
Officers Respond to Hostage Situation
Upon entering the apartment, officers encountered both the hostage and the suspect. The report detailed that officers perceived an immediate threat, prompting a deputy to discharge his firearm multiple times at the suspect. Thankfully, the hostage remained unharmed throughout the ordeal.
The suspect, a woman, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was provided with immediate medical assistance. She was subsequently transported to Altru Hospital for treatment. Fortunately, no officers sustained injuries during the incident, and the report confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the public.

In accordance with standard procedures, the deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated.
