Teacher Launches Benefit Concerts for the Homeless in Connecticut

A high school teacher in Connecticut has turned a casual conversation with a student into a significant initiative to support the homeless. Joey Batts, a language arts teacher, recognized the impact of housing insecurity after learning that one of his students had no stable place to stay. This moment, occurring over a decade ago, inspired Batts to act, leading to the creation of the nonprofit organization, **Hip Hop for the Homeless**.

The organization has grown tremendously, raising **$54,000** and gathering numerous donations of food, toiletries, and clothing over the years. As they enter their twelfth season, Batts has organized nine benefit concerts throughout Connecticut, starting on **December 4, 2024**, in **New Haven**. The concerts will run for three weeks, providing a platform for various performers to contribute to a worthy cause.

Batts, whose full name is **Joey Battaglia**, has made a name for himself not only as a teacher but also as a rapper. He began his career aspiring to fame in music, but over time, he discovered a deep passion for teaching. Currently in his **18th year** at **Howell Cheney Technical High School** in Manchester, Batts finds fulfillment in both his roles.

As winter approaches, Batts is particularly focused on fundraising to help communities endure the cold months. He notes that the money raised from the concerts can significantly impact local populations. “In some communities, the money raised is enough to get the population through the winter,” he explained.

The concerts take place in local businesses such as restaurants and bars, which Batts believes fosters a sense of community. “It’s amazing to activate our community spaces,” he said. “Every year it feels amazing. We’re very thankful our tour has gained so much popularity.”

Attendees can expect a “positive, loving environment” at the events, which have garnered a loyal following. Batts proudly acknowledges the support they have received, stating, “We’ve definitely built a cult following.”

For his contributions to the arts and community service, Batts received the **Connecticut Arts Hero award** for **2025**. His efforts not only highlight the importance of supporting those in need but also showcase the power of community-driven initiatives.
