Heroes and Helpers Celebrates 10 Years of Holiday Cheer in Bemidji

UPDATE: Heroes and Helpers has just celebrated its 10th anniversary, bringing joy to 44 local children in Bemidji during a festive shopping event on December 13, 2023. Hosted by local law enforcement and the Lions Clubs, this annual initiative continues to foster positive relationships between youth and community heroes.

The event kicked off at the “Sparkle Shop” inside Walmart, where children were paired with representatives from the Bemidji Fire Department, Bemidji Police Department, and other local heroes. Each child received $125 to shop for gifts, making this a memorable holiday experience.

Tabitha Carrigan, a Bemidji Police Officer and event organizer, reported that since its inception in 2016, Heroes and Helpers has provided holiday cheer to 253 elementary-aged children. “We have 44 kids scheduled to shop with us tonight, which is a significant increase from the 20 kids who attended the first year,” Carrigan emphasized.

This year marked a new milestone with the inclusion of children from Blackduck. Thanks to the efforts of former Blackduck officer Travis Amsden, nine children from the community participated, supported by their local fire and police departments, as well as Lions Club members.

The emotional impact of this initiative is profound. Long-time participants, like Bob Sandbo, President of the Bemidji Lions Club, shared their heartfelt commitment: “I’ve been here every year, helping in various capacities. It’s a fun way to interact with the community and support our children,” he said.

Behind the scenes, fundraising remains a critical challenge. Carrigan highlighted the need for ongoing support, stating, “With 44 kids receiving $5,500 to shop, fundraising is our biggest hurdle. I need to confirm funding by October to determine how many children can participate.”

The event not only provides gifts but also creates lasting memories. “I’ve yet to shop with a kid in ten years because I handle the organization,” Carrigan chuckled. “But the joy on their faces when they finish shopping makes it all worthwhile.”

As the holiday season approaches, Heroes and Helpers continues to spread cheer and strengthen community ties, proving that the spirit of giving can transform lives, one child at a time.

Stay tuned for updates on how you can support this incredible initiative in the coming months!
