Ralston Valley’s Zeke Andrews Leads Team to Historic Title Game

The Ralston Valley Mustangs, led by dual-threat quarterback Zeke Andrews, are set to make their first appearance in the state title game on Saturday in Fort Collins. This historic moment comes after a season filled with challenges and triumphs, culminating in a showdown against the formidable Cherry Creek Bruins.

Andrews has been a key player for the Mustangs (13-0), demonstrating remarkable skill and determination throughout the season. A standout moment occurred during a non-conference game against Valor Christian on September 26, when he executed an impressive touchdown run, showcasing his ability to evade defenders. Jared Yannacito, head coach of Ralston Valley, highlighted this play as a testament to Andrews’ hard work and leadership. “That play summarized the kind of work he’s put in over the last two years as a starter,” Yannacito said.

This season marked a significant breakthrough for Ralston Valley, which had faced heartbreak in previous years. The Mustangs fell short in the semifinals during the last two seasons, losing to Valor Christian in double overtime in 2022 and to Cherry Creek in a close game in 2023. Andrews, who took on the starting role last year, expressed the team’s resilience, saying, “There were never any doubts about what we could do.”

Overcoming obstacles has been a hallmark of the Mustangs’ journey this year. Early in the season, junior running back Colton Stratman suffered a season-ending knee injury. Despite this setback, junior Sawyer Blomquist stepped up as the primary running back. Additionally, Andrews faced his own challenges after sustaining a lacerated kidney on October 16, which kept him sidelined for two games.

The Mustangs demonstrated their depth with junior quarterback Logan Gabler stepping in during Andrews’ absence, leading the team to decisive victories. Their most recent challenge came in the semifinals against Mountain Vista, where Ralston Valley rallied from a 14-0 first-quarter deficit to win 31-28 on a last-second field goal by Landon Plichta.

Andrews’ leadership has been pivotal during these trying times. Junior wide receiver Levi Rillos noted, “He’s using his voice to make sure we get into the right plays. He’s keeping the morale up on the sideline.” Rillos, alongside teammates like Ethan Shirazi, who leads the team in receiving yards, provides Andrews with a strong supporting cast.

As Ralston Valley prepares for the championship game, they face a formidable opponent in Cherry Creek. Coach Dave Logan recognizes the challenge posed by Andrews, stating, “He can throw it with accuracy, he’s an excellent athlete, he’s tough. He makes that offense go.” Andrews has thrown for 2,618 yards this season, with 25 touchdowns and only three interceptions, while also rushing for 749 yards and 13 touchdowns.

In a recent turn of events, Andrews de-committed from Colorado State after discussions with new head coach Jim Mora, who indicated that Andrews might not fit into the Rams’ future plans. This change has shifted Andrews’ focus back to his current team and their pursuit of a championship.

The upcoming title game represents not just a chance for victory but an opportunity for Ralston Valley to make its mark in state football history. “We just need to be who we are, and play how we’ve been playing to get here,” Rillos said, emphasizing the team’s commitment to their identity.

As the Mustangs prepare to face Cherry Creek, they remain focused on their goal of capturing the state title, a testament to their hard work and dedication throughout the season.
