URGENT UPDATE: The West Ranch girls’ basketball team kicked off their league play with a thrilling victory over Golden Valley, winning 26-20 at West Ranch High School on December 2, 2025. This marks their seventh win in the season, now standing at 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the Foothill League.
In a high-stakes matchup, freshman guards Mia Vallas from West Ranch and Brighton Blythe of Golden Valley showcased their skills, each leading their teams in scoring. Vallas dominated the court, netting 16 points, including two crucial three-pointers, while Blythe contributed 13 points for the Grizzlies.
West Ranch head coach Paul Gross praised his team’s effort, stating, “We battled the whole game. We played great defense and worked really hard.” He emphasized the significance of teamwork, noting how Vallas benefitted from her teammates creating opportunities for her shots.
The Wildcats displayed a balanced offensive strategy, with seven players contributing to the scoreline. Freshman forward Arianna Corona added 12 points, underlining the depth of the team. Coach Gross highlighted the importance of their defensive execution, which played a crucial role in securing their lead throughout the game.
While Golden Valley fell to 4-3 and 0-1, Blythe’s performance offered a silver lining as they prepare for upcoming matches. The Grizzlies will not compete in the second round of Foothill League action on Friday but will participate in the Triumph Charter and Viewpoint tournaments at Vaugh High School on Thursday and Friday.
Looking ahead, West Ranch is set to face the Castaic Coyotes this Friday at 5 p.m., aiming to maintain their momentum in the league. Coach Gross expressed confidence in his team’s ability to rise to the challenges ahead, stating, “It’s a tough league, and we have tough games ahead, but I like the start.”
In other Foothill League action, the Saugus Centurions dominated the Castaic Coyotes with a score of 73-32, led by EvaMarie Rios, who recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 assists. Additionally, Canyon Cowboys triumphed over the Hart Hawks 56-27, fueled by sophomore Darby Dunn’s impressive 27 points.
