Browns Name Shedeur Sanders Starting QB as Deshaun Watson Returns to Practice

A report on Wednesday confirmed that Shedeur Sanders will take over as the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, surpassing fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel for the remainder of the season. This development comes as the Browns also announced a significant move regarding Deshaun Watson, who has been designated to return to practice after a lengthy absence due to injury, prompting discussions about his role moving forward.

Watson, who has not played since suffering a torn Achilles tendon in October 2024, underwent a second surgery on January 9, 2025, following a reinjury during his recovery. The Browns now have 21 days to either activate him to the roster or place him on the physically unable to perform list for the rest of the season. This decision raises questions about Watson’s future with the team, as he has struggled since joining Cleveland in March 2022 under a controversial fully guaranteed five-year, $230 million contract.

During a press conference, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski noted Watson’s diligent rehabilitation efforts. When asked about the possibility of Watson taking snaps in the upcoming month, Stefanski stated, “Really not my focus. Not his focus right this minute. His focus is putting a helmet on, shoulder pads, throwing a football.”

In the meantime, Sanders, who has recorded a 1-1 record in his first two starts, is set to lead the Browns as they face the Tennessee Titans this Sunday. Gabriel struggled in his six starts, managing only one victory against five losses. The Browns, currently at 3-9, will look to Sanders to provide a spark as they aim to end their season on a high note.

As discussions around Watson’s future continue, speculation arises about a potential split between him and the franchise. Analysts suggest that a reset may be in order for the Browns, which could include parting ways with both Watson and Stefanski, although such changes might not occur before Watson returns to the active roster.

The coming weeks will be critical for both Sanders and Watson, as the Browns navigate a tumultuous season. With the team facing the Titans, all eyes will be on Sanders to see if he can solidify his position and lead the Browns to a much-needed victory.
