Grady Health System has launched a new outpatient center on Flat Shoals Parkway in DeKalb County, aimed at improving healthcare access in an area identified as a medical desert. This facility is the first of two outpatient centers expected to open in the county within the month, marking a significant expansion of Grady’s services in the region.
The new center will provide a diverse range of healthcare services including primary care, behavioral health, nephrology, and orthopedics. Additionally, the facility will feature on-site imaging and laboratory services, which are designed to offer faster test results and streamline patient care for local residents. This initiative comes in response to a pressing healthcare gap intensified by the closure of Atlanta Medical Center in 2022.
Shannon Sale, Grady’s Chief Administrative Officer, highlighted the importance of localized care, stating, “We’ve worked over the last few years recognizing that having care closer to home is better for the community.” This sentiment has resonated with residents, as evidenced by the overwhelming response to the clinic’s opening. Appointments for the first week have already been fully booked.
In a statement reported by WSB-TV, Lorraine Cochran-Johnson, CEO of DeKalb County, emphasized the positive impact of the new facility, saying, “People look to government for what they cannot do for themselves… and today we’re stepping up.” Local community members have expressed relief and gratitude for the new healthcare options available to them. Resident Cathie Davenport remarked, “It’s a blessing because we are really Grady patients. And we have to drive to Brookhaven. So, it is a blessing to have a facility in our area.”
The collaboration between Grady Health System and local authorities has been vital in making these centers a reality. Anthony Saul, Grady’s Chief Operating Officer, noted the significance of this partnership, stating, “For Grady, having the ability to work with the commissioners to bring healthcare closer to our neighborhoods… it’s a tremendous win for everyone.”
The new outpatient center not only signifies Grady’s commitment to enhancing healthcare access but also marks the establishment of its ninth community health center. A tenth center is set to open on Candler Road in the coming weeks, further expanding the network of available services in DeKalb County.
Grady Health System’s investment in local healthcare is a crucial step toward addressing the needs of communities that have faced significant healthcare access challenges. As these facilities open their doors, residents can look forward to improved healthcare equity and a greater range of services closer to home.
