Urgent Freeze Warnings Issued for Eastern Inyo, Clark, and Mohave

URGENT UPDATE: Residents of eastern Inyo County, northeastern Clark County, and southern/central Mohave County are facing a harsh reality this morning as the first freeze of the season sweeps through the area. The National Weather Service in Las Vegas has issued Freeze Warnings, effective until 8 AM PST, with temperatures plummeting to as low as 34 degrees in several locations, including Shoshone, Tecopa, Mesquite, Moapa, and Kingman.

The chill is just the beginning. The NWS warns that a persistent northwest flow is expected to bring sporadic north winds, leading to a continued drop in temperatures throughout the week. Residents should brace for colder conditions as the forecast indicates a shift in weather patterns.

As we look ahead, travel and outdoor plans may be complicated by the forecast. A system is expected to move into the southern Great Basin and Mojave Desert midweek, bringing increased northerly winds gusting between 15 to 25 mph. In the wind-swept valleys, especially those running north-south, gusts could reach between 25 to 35 mph on Wednesday and Thursday. Those planning outdoor activities should remain vigilant and prepare for sudden weather changes.

For those yearning for warmer days, relief is on the horizon. By Friday, temperatures are predicted to rise to levels described by the NWS as “above-normal,” providing a welcome break from the cold snap. However, until then, residents and visitors are strongly advised to prepare for windy and cooler conditions, particularly if they plan to be outside.

For pilots and travelers at Harry Reid International Airport, the NWS aviation forecast indicates light winds following typical daily patterns, with a shift to the northwest expected by mid-morning tomorrow. Winds may increase to around 10 KT, with the possibility of higher gusts later in the day. VFR conditions will prevail, although mid- and high-level clouds are anticipated to increase throughout the day.

The NWS has also called upon its network of citizen weather observers to report any significant weather events or impacts. This community of spotters plays a crucial role in monitoring and informing the public about changing conditions.
