Meridian Health Plan Allocates $1.15 Million to Combat Food Insecurity

Meridian Health Plan of Illinois, a subsidiary of Centene Corporation, has announced a significant commitment to addressing food insecurity in the region. On December 2, 2025, the company revealed it will provide a grant of $1.15 million over the next three years to support the Food On The Move program, a mobile pantry initiative operated by the St. Louis Area Foodbank.

This partnership will enhance access to healthy food and essential resources for underserved populations throughout Illinois. The initiative is part of Meridian’s broader Eat Well, Be Well program, which aims to promote nutrition awareness and improve food access in areas designated as food deserts, particularly in urban and rural communities.

Expanding Reach Through Mobile Services

The Food On The Move program is designed to deliver nutritious food directly to those most in need. By deploying mobile pantries, the initiative effectively reaches areas where access to fresh produce and healthy options is limited. This is especially critical in regions facing economic challenges and food scarcity.

According to the St. Louis Area Foodbank, the program has successfully served thousands of individuals and families, providing them with the necessary support to improve their dietary choices. The grant from Meridian will expand these efforts, enabling the program to schedule additional stops and increase the quantity of food distributed.

Aligning with Community Health Goals

Meridian’s investment aligns with the company’s mission to promote health equity and improve the overall well-being of communities across Illinois. With food insecurity linked to various health issues, including obesity and chronic diseases, initiatives like Food On The Move play a vital role in fostering healthier populations.

Dr. Michael H. DeBaun, Chief Medical Officer for Meridian Health Plan of Illinois, emphasized the importance of access to healthy food as a foundation for good health. He stated, “Our partnership with the St. Louis Area Foodbank is a step toward ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their circumstances, have the opportunity to eat well and lead healthier lives.”

This substantial financial commitment underscores Meridian’s dedication to addressing social determinants of health. By targeting food insecurity, the company aims to create a positive ripple effect that can improve community health outcomes.

As the program unfolds, the St. Louis Area Foodbank and Meridian will continue to assess its impact, with the goal of adjusting strategies to meet the evolving needs of the community. Through this collaboration, both organizations aspire to make lasting changes in the fight against food deserts in Illinois.
