Library Foundation Opens New Bookstore in Mission Hills Today

URGENT UPDATE: The Library Foundation SD has officially opened its new bookstore today in Mission Hills, transforming the former public library space into a vibrant community hub. Located at the corner of West Washington and Hawk streets, this independent shop aims to highlight local and LGBTQ+ authors while fostering community engagement.

Patrick Stewart, CEO of Library Foundation SD, stated, “The Library Shop is excited to join the Mission Hills business community. We are proud to be part of the resurgence of independent bookstores in San Diego and around the U.S.” This urgent opening comes as part of a growing movement to support local businesses and literature.

The bookstore not only offers a selection of new books but also features unique gifts for book lovers. With the former library site vacant after the library relocated half a mile away, this initiative breathes new life into the neighborhood.

San Diego City Councilman Stephen Whitburn, who represents Mission Hills, expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “Turning the former Mission Hills Library into a bookshop and community gathering space is a win for this neighborhood.” This effort reflects the community’s desire for inclusive and culturally rich spaces.

Among its diverse offerings, the Library Shop Mission Hills will spotlight new arrivals, staff recommendations, and books by local authors. Notably, it will showcase works by LGBTQ+ authors, paying homage to its proximity to the historic Hillcrest neighborhood. Additionally, the shop will feature banned books, aligning with the foundation’s initiative to combat censorship and promote literary freedom.

The new bookstore will also function as a community venue for author events and speaking tours. As part of its mission, the Library Foundation SD aims to strengthen communities by enhancing the San Diego Public Library system through philanthropy and outreach.

This opening is not just about books; it’s about reviving community connections and supporting the local economy. Residents and visitors alike are encouraged to show their love for libraries and local culture by visiting the new shop.

As the Library Foundation continues its commitment to enriching San Diego’s literary landscape, the Mission Hills location stands as a testament to the enduring power of community and literature.
