Verizon Launches Affordable 5G Fixed Wireless Access Service
Verizon has introduced a budget-friendly version of its 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) service, targeting consumers with light internet needs in areas outside its Fios broadband coverage. The new service, named Verizon Home Internet Lite (VHI), aims to meet the demands of households that have historically relied on slower broadband options such as DSL or satellite.
This offering is designed for customers with minimal daily internet usage requirements. According to a representative from Verizon, VHI operates on C-Band frequencies when the 5G network is unavailable, ensuring connectivity in a range of environments. The service is available for $25 per month when bundled with a mobile plan, or $35 as a standalone option.
VHI has a maximum download speed of 25 Mb/s, with typical speeds ranging from 10 Mb/s to 25 Mb/s. After the first 15 GB of data is consumed in a month, speeds are throttled to a maximum of 10 Mb/s for the remainder of that billing cycle, although the service remains unlimited. Customers will receive a free router for self-installation, making it accessible to a wider audience.
Verizon’s standard 5G Home Internet services are priced between $35 and $75 per month, depending on the specific plan and whether customers have an existing mobile tariff. In the second quarter, Verizon added 278,000 FWA customers, bringing its total to 5.1 million subscribers. The company’s CEO, Hans Vestberg, has stated that Verizon is on track to meet its goal of reaching between 8 million and 9 million subscribers for its FWA service by 2028.
Additionally, earlier in October, Verizon announced a deal to acquire regional FWA provider Starry for an undisclosed amount. This acquisition is part of the company’s strategy to expand its service offerings, particularly in buildings with multiple dwelling units.
Verizon’s introduction of VHI reflects a growing trend towards more affordable internet solutions, especially for consumers who may not require high-speed connections for heavy usage but still seek reliable service. With this new offering, Verizon aims to bridge the gap for those traditionally underserved by existing broadband options.
