U.S. F-15s Shot Down by Kuwaiti Air Defenses in Friendly Fire Incident

Three U.S. F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jets were shot down by Kuwaiti air defenses on March 10, 2024, in what has been described as a friendly fire incident. This information was confirmed by U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) on Sunday. The aircraft were engaged in support of Operation Epic Fury, a collaborative military initiative led by the United States and Israel against Iran.

All six pilots aboard the downed jets successfully ejected and have been recovered in stable condition, according to a CENTCOM release. The U.S. military expressed gratitude towards the Kuwaiti defense forces for their role in the ongoing operation and acknowledged Kuwait’s recognition of the incident. An investigation is currently underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the event.

Escalating tensions in the region have been attributed to increased retaliatory strikes by Iran, which have intensified over the past 24 hours. These attacks have targeted multinational military bases and civilian infrastructure, raising significant concerns about regional stability. In a statement issued on March 11, the Kuwait Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned Iran for its actions, describing the strikes as unjustified and harmful to civilians.

The statement read, “The State of Kuwait, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Kingdom of Bahrain, the State of Qatar, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States of America strongly condemn the Islamic Republic of Iran’s indiscriminate and reckless attacks with missiles and drones against sovereign territories across the region.”

Operation Epic Fury commenced at 01:15 on March 9, 2024, with the aim of dismantling key components of the Iranian regime’s security apparatus. Targets included facilities belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, air defense systems, missile and drone launch sites, and military airfields. Among the high-profile targets was the compound of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

While a senior Israeli official reported that Khamenei was killed in the strike, former President Donald Trump also confirmed this via a post on Truth Social, calling it a pivotal moment for the Iranian people.

The conflict has resulted in significant casualties. According to CENTCOM, three U.S. service members have been killed during combat operations against Iran, with an additional five reported as seriously wounded. Meanwhile, the Iranian Red Crescent Society reported that at least 555 individuals in Iran have lost their lives due to the U.S.-Israeli strikes, with over 130 cities across the country impacted by the military actions.

As the situation continues to evolve, the international community watches closely, aware that the ramifications extend beyond military engagements to the broader geopolitical landscape of the Middle East.
