Russian Attacks in Ukraine Leave Nine Dead in Ternopil Strikes

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that nine people have been killed and many more injured following a Russian assault on the western city of Ternopil. The attack, described by Zelensky as a “brazen” act, involved the launch of over 470 drones and 47 missiles targeting various locations across Ukraine overnight.

This assault marked one of the deadliest incidents in western Ukraine since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. Zelensky confirmed significant destruction in Ternopil, where nine-storey residential blocks were hit, raising concerns that people may be trapped under the debris.

Widespread Casualties and Damage

The devastating strikes extended beyond Ternopil, affecting three districts of Ukraine’s second-largest city, Kharkiv. In this area, more than 30 individuals were injured, including children, as a result of a massive drone attack. Images shared on social media depicted buildings and vehicles engulfed in flames.

The Ukrainian Energy Ministry reported power outages in several regions due to the strikes. Critical infrastructure, including energy facilities and transport networks, sustained extensive damage throughout western Ukraine. The energy sector in the Ivano-Frankivsk region was specifically targeted, resulting in injuries to two children among the three reported casualties.

Moreover, in the Lviv region, the head of the local government confirmed that an energy facility was also struck during the assault.

International Response and Calls for Aid

Zelensky, who is currently in Turkey for discussions with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, emphasized the need for increased support from Ukraine’s allies. In a statement, he remarked, “Every brazen attack against ordinary life shows that the pressure on Russia is insufficient. Effective sanctions and assistance to Ukraine can change this.”

Prior to his meetings in Ankara, Zelensky expressed a desire to “intensify” peace negotiations. However, the Kremlin announced that no Russian representatives would participate in the talks.

As the situation evolves, further updates will be provided to ensure comprehensive coverage of the ongoing conflict and its humanitarian impact.
