Nelson Shines with 244 Yards, Three Touchdowns in Monmouth’s Victory

Rodney Nelson delivered an outstanding performance, rushing for a career-high 244 yards on 34 carries and scoring three touchdowns, leading the Monmouth Hawks to a decisive 35-7 victory over the Bryant Bulldogs on November 4, 2023. This win marks Monmouth’s sixth consecutive triumph and improves their record to 8-1, with a perfect 5-0 in the Coastal Athletic Association.

The Hawks dominated the first half with a strong offensive display, scoring 21 points before the break. Nelson’s explosive performance included a remarkable 69-yard touchdown run during the Hawks’ second drive, setting the tone for the game. Just before halftime, Nelson caught a 49-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Frankie Weaver, extending Monmouth’s lead to 14 points.

Monmouth’s defense played a significant role in the victory, limiting Bryant to just 226 yards of total offense. Despite not forcing any turnovers, they effectively stifled Bryant’s progress, holding the Bulldogs to a 4 for 13 record on third downs and a mere 1 for 3 on fourth downs.

Weaver, completing 14 of 19 passes for 218 yards, contributed to the Hawks’ offensive success, throwing two touchdown passes but also recording two interceptions. His connection with Nelson highlighted the Hawks’ aerial threat, which complemented their formidable ground game.

For Bryant, Zyheem Collick led the receiving corps with three catches for 69 yards. This loss marks the Bulldogs’ sixth consecutive defeat after starting the season with a 2-1 record, including a notable win over FBS member UMass.

With this victory, Monmouth solidifies its position as a contender in the FCS coaches’ poll, currently ranked ninth. The Hawks will look to maintain their momentum as they continue their season, aiming for a strong finish in the Coastal Athletic Association.
