Kim Jong Un Celebrates New Year with Daughter, Highlights National Achievements

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un participated in New Year’s celebrations in Pyongyang, showcasing fireworks, patriotic songs, traditional dances, and a taekwondo demonstration, as reported by state media KCNA on January 1. Notably, Kim was joined by his daughter Ju Ae, who is speculated by analysts to be a potential successor. Photographs released by KCNA depicted the pair embracing children and sitting closely together, signifying a familial and public bond.

During his address to the nation, Kim praised the accomplishments of the North Korean populace, attributing these to what he termed “successes and phenomenal changes” in the year 2025. He emphasized the need for unity among citizens, particularly as the 9th Congress of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea approaches, scheduled for early 2026. This congress is anticipated to outline the country’s strategic direction over the next five years, encompassing critical areas such as nuclear capabilities, weapons development, and economic policies.

In a pointed message, Kim extended greetings to North Korean troops engaged alongside Russian forces in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. He characterized these troops as the “greatest strength and pride” of the nation, indicating that their efforts are integral to North Korea’s security. “Be brave. Behind you are Pyongyang and Moscow,” he reportedly stated, reinforcing the connection between the two countries.

The New Year celebrations also included well-wishes received by Kim from various international leaders, including a message from the President of China. While KCNA did not specify Xi Jinping by name, it highlighted the ongoing diplomatic ties and the exchange of goodwill between North Korea and its allies.

These events mark a significant moment in North Korea’s political landscape, as the leadership seeks to bolster national pride and prepare for future challenges. As the nation gears up for the upcoming party congress, the focus remains on maintaining unity and advancing its long-term strategic goals.
