All-Star third baseman and American League MVP finalist José Ramírez has secured his future with the Cleveland Guardians, agreeing to a seven-year, $175 million contract, according to an anonymous source familiar with the negotiations. The deal, which remains subject to a physical examination, ensures that Ramírez will remain with the franchise through the 2028 season.
The 33-year-old native of the Dominican Republic has spent his entire 13-year Major League Baseball career with the Guardians. Previously, he had three years and $69 million remaining on the contract signed in 2022. Under the new agreement, he will earn an average of $25 million annually over the next seven years. This contract also includes a no-trade clause and performance bonuses tied to his placement in MVP voting, where he has finished in the top five on six occasions.
Record-Setting Performance
Ramírez’s contributions have been pivotal in the Guardians’ recent successes. Since his Major League debut in 2013, the team has reached the postseason eight times, including a heartbreaking loss to the Chicago Cubs in the 2016 World Series. The Guardians have claimed the American League Central title for the past two seasons, showcasing their competitive edge within the league.
Last season, Ramírez achieved a historic milestone, becoming the first player in franchise history to record at least 250 home runs and 250 stolen bases. He is now among an elite group of players, including Carlos Beltrán, who have achieved this feat as switch-hitters. As of the end of the 2026 season, Ramírez boasts 285 home runs and 287 stolen bases, underscoring his all-around offensive capabilities.
A Stellar Career Continues
The seven-time American League All-Star had a standout season in 2025, not only achieving a career-high of 44 stolen bases but also becoming just the fourth player in MLB history with multiple seasons of at least 30 home runs and 40 steals. His impressive batting average of .283 included a career-long hit streak of 21 games from May 6 to May 28.
Ramírez continues to set records within the franchise, leading in extra-base hits with 726 and multi-homer games with 27. He ranks second in both home runs and RBIs, with 949 runs batted in. His combination of power and speed makes him a valuable asset for the Guardians as they aim to build on their recent successes and strive for a championship in the seasons to come.
The agreement marks a significant commitment from both Ramírez and the Guardians, emphasizing their shared ambition for continued success in the competitive landscape of Major League Baseball.
