Estonian writer-director-producer Rain Rannu premiered his latest film, New Money, at the 29th edition of the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival on November 14, 2023. The film, which serves as a follow-up to Rannu’s 2023 dramedy Free Money, humorously tackles the question: What would you do with over 50 million euros—approximately $58 million—in your bank account?
The packed audience at the Baltic Competition screening enjoyed a night filled with laughter, as Märt Pius and Steffi Pähn reprised their roles as the couple Taavi and Liisa. The cast also includes Ivo Uukkivi, Elina Masing, Edgar Vunš, and Keith Siilats. The film is produced by Rannu and Tõnu Hiielaid through their production company Tallifornia, with sales managed by Baltic Crime.
Plot Overview and Themes
In New Money, the narrative revolves around a humble teacher, Liisa, and a modest IT wizard, Taavi. Their decision to participate in a tabloid interview leads to unexpected consequences, including a storm of anonymous insults, unsolicited offers, and indecent proposals. The plot thickens when Taavi suddenly finds himself a millionaire, thanks to 50 million euros in Bitcoin. As the couple grapples with their newfound wealth, Taavi reflects on his life choices and the overwhelming nature of sudden riches.
“One of the themes of this movie was ‘more money, more problems’,” Rannu remarked, highlighting the story’s underlying message. The film humorously examines the complexities and challenges that arise when wealth enters the picture.
Production Insights and Future Prospects
During the festival, Rannu shared anecdotes from the film’s production, including experiences from shooting in Miami, which plays a significant role in the story. He clarified that although New Money is not a direct sequel to Free Money, it was a natural progression to explore the lives of Taavi and Liisa further.
“When I made the last one, I really liked those two characters, and I thought that maybe it would be great to spend some more time with them,” Rannu explained. After sending the script to the actors, their enthusiastic response led to the film’s development.
Rannu also discussed his experience co-editing the film, stating, “I really enjoy the process, because in editing, you can make it or break it.” He emphasized the importance of focusing on the right elements to convey the intended message effectively.
Looking ahead, Rannu hinted at the possibility of a third film set in the universe of Free Money and New Money. “A couple of good ideas are floating around already,” he shared, suggesting that stories exploring the characters could unfold in future projects.
For those intrigued by the humorous take on wealth and its implications, a trailer for New Money is now available, promising an engaging cinematic experience.
