Christmas Celebrations Return to Bethlehem After Two-Year Hiatus

Christmas festivities are set to resume in Bethlehem, a historic city in the West Bank, following a two-year interruption due to the ongoing war in Gaza. Mayor Maher Canawati announced that celebrations will commence on December 6, 2023, featuring a traditional Christmas tree lighting ceremony in the iconic Manger Square.

In a video shared on social media, Mayor Canawati expressed his hopes for peace, stating, “From the heart of Bethlehem, the birthplace of Christ, the city of peace — once again, we ignite the flame of hope and raise our prayers for peace.” He invited everyone to join in the celebration, emphasizing the message of Christmas: “Glory to God in the highest — on Earth, peace, goodwill to all. Bethlehem keeps the light alive.”

Historic Significance of Manger Square

Manger Square, located at the center of Bethlehem, holds deep significance as it is named after the manger where Jesus was said to have been laid after his birth. This year’s festivities are particularly poignant, as thousands of pilgrims and tourists are expected to visit the city during the holiday season. The Church of the Nativity, built over the grotto traditionally recognized as Jesus Christ’s birthplace, underwent renovations in 2019, enhancing its appeal to visitors.

Robert Jeffress, Senior Pastor of the First Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas, shared his enthusiasm about the return of celebrations in the “little town of Bethlehem.” He remarked, “It is encouraging to see the town once again celebrating the birth of the most important person in history.” Despite the temporary ceasefire in the region, Jeffress reminded viewers of the enduring conflict, saying, “While we rejoice in this temporary peace agreement, which has led to a cessation of hostilities in the area, we should recognize that such a peace is only temporary.”

A Return to Tradition

The return of Christmas celebrations marks a significant moment for Bethlehem, especially after two challenging years. In 2019, the city welcomed approximately 1.4 million visitors during the holiday season, a figure that highlights the importance of these festivities for both the local community and international tourists. In previous years, the mayor emphasized the city’s commitment to organizing more attractive and engaging celebrations for visitors and residents alike.

As the festivities draw closer, the spirit of Christmas is reigniting hope and unity in Bethlehem. The city, known for its rich history and cultural heritage, is once again preparing to welcome the world, embodying the themes of peace and goodwill central to the holiday season.
