A 70-year-old man from El Cajon, California, is recovering from serious injuries sustained in a hit-and-run incident that occurred on March 12, 2024. Julio Arreola was struck by a vehicle while crossing the street near US Bank on Fletcher Parkway and Pioneer Way around 15:30 local time.
Arreola reflected on his experience from his hospital bed, stating, “I was lucky not to get killed or paralyzed.” His injuries include fractures to his ribs and spine, along with a head injury that required staples, as reported by his sister, Luz Arreola.
The suspect, identified as 19-year-old Brian Guevara, fled the scene but was later apprehended by police using license plate readers. Guevara has been booked on charges related to the hit-and-run.
Community Concerns and Impact
Due to his injuries, Arreola is currently unable to work at his television repair shop. He is focused on recovery while also facing financial pressures to cover his bills. This incident highlights a troubling pattern of hit-and-run cases in the region. Just recently, a 6-year-old boy was killed near City Heights, and another incident in El Cajon resulted in a 12-year-old boy being hospitalized.
Arreola and his family are calling for increased caution among drivers to prevent further tragedies. The rise in hit-and-run incidents has sparked concern in the community, with many urging local authorities to take action to ensure pedestrian safety.
As the investigation continues, the community remains vigilant, hoping that Arreola’s story will serve as a reminder for drivers to be more aware of their surroundings.
