UPDATE: Wisconsin-Superior’s athletic teams delivered a stunning performance this weekend, clinching conference titles in men’s soccer and cross country while facing challenges in women’s soccer. The Yellowjackets dominated Martin Luther with an emphatic 8-0 victory in men’s soccer, solidifying their status in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC).
The men’s soccer team showcased their offensive prowess at the Superior Choice Credit Union Stadium in Superior, scoring four goals within the first 18 minutes. Notably, Bryce Boldt contributed two goals to the rout. The Yellowjackets, now sporting a record of 14-6 and 12-0 in UMAC play, will host fourth-place Crown in a tournament semifinal on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
Earlier in the weekend, UWS had secured the league title following a 4-0 triumph over Bethany Lutheran, marking their eighth consecutive conference championship. The team quickly took control, with Jake Kidd scoring just two minutes into the match.
In women’s soccer, however, the Yellowjackets faced disappointment as their four-year reign as UMAC champions came to an end. A 2-1 loss to Bethany Lutheran on Friday dropped them to third place in the conference standings. Despite outshooting their opponents 20-9, UWS couldn’t find the net until the 89th minute, when Niamh Larson scored. They will now prepare for a road match at Bethany Lutheran on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
In cross country, the UWS men claimed their eighth title at the UMAC meet in Winthrop, Minnesota, with Dylan Uitto setting a personal best of 26:18.1 over the 8-kilometer course. The Yellowjackets nearly achieved a perfect score, sweeping the top four spots. The women’s team placed fourth with 115 points, led by Lilley Smith.
In men’s hockey, Wisconsin-Superior started their season with a commanding 7-0 win over Marian, showcasing their potential as they aim for a successful campaign. Justin Dauphinais scored the first goal while Jan Skorpik secured a shutout with 17 saves.
The women’s hockey team, however, struggled in their opening games, suffering back-to-back shutouts against Lake Forest. They will look to bounce back on Friday, Nov. 7, at Hamline.
Lastly, the UWS volleyball team remains competitive despite a recent loss to Northwestern, having previously secured a decisive victory against North Central. They are currently positioned second in the UMAC standings and are poised to secure a home semifinal in the upcoming conference championship.
This championship weekend has had significant implications for Wisconsin-Superior’s athletic programs. Fans and followers are eager to see if UWS can maintain this momentum as they head into critical playoff matches this week.
