Urgent Winter Storm Warning: Heavy Snow Hits Western Colorado

UPDATE: A severe winter storm is set to impact Western Colorado starting tonight, bringing heavy snow and dangerous travel conditions. Winter Storm Warnings are now in effect for key areas from 11 PM Monday until 5 AM Thursday, prompting urgent advisories for residents and travelers alike.

Conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly as rain transitions to snow, with 10 to 18 inches of snow forecasted in mountain regions. Severe wind gusts reaching 60-70 mph will create whiteout conditions, rendering travel difficult to impossible on mountain passes.

The latest warnings cover numerous locations, including the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre Plateau, San Juan Mountains, and Vail Pass. These regions encompass popular destinations such as Telluride, Crested Butte, and Snowmass. Travelers heading towards Metro Salt Lake City should also prepare for significant delays.

According to meteorologists, snowfall is expected to begin with a wave of rain and snow across the valleys and mountains tonight, with further precipitation continuing through Tuesday evening. The heaviest snow will arrive early Wednesday, with conditions worsening overnight.

“A Winter Storm Warning indicates that winter weather conditions could be dangerous,”

warned local authorities. “Travel through the mountains could become nearly impossible.”

In addition to the snowfall, a Wind Advisory is in place for much of Southwest Colorado from 5 AM Tuesday to 5 PM Tuesday, with gusts hitting up to 50 mph in areas such as Rangeley, Cortez, and Durango. Residents in these areas should remain vigilant as winds can exacerbate already hazardous conditions.

The storm is poised to create significant disruptions not only for locals but also for those traveling through Colorado’s mountainous routes. Authorities recommend avoiding non-essential travel during this period.

As conditions develop, additional snowfall is likely on Thursday and Friday, with snow accumulation potentially exceeding 3 feet in some high-altitude regions, particularly near Wolf Creek Pass.

With the forecast calling for continued precipitation throughout the week, residents are urged to stay informed and prepare for evolving conditions. Follow local advisories and updates as this storm unfolds, and share this information with those who may be affected.
