UPDATE: Starting as early as Dec. 1, 2025, a significant portion of the Virginia Capital Trail will be closed for urgent construction, impacting thousands of cyclists and pedestrians. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has confirmed a multiweek closure to replace the bridge deck between mile markers 3 and 4 along the Jamestown leg of the 52-mile trail.
According to VDOT, the closure will affect the trail along John Tyler Highway (Route 5), specifically from just east of Governor’s Landing Road to Heritage Landing Road. The work is expected to last two to three weeks, depending on weather conditions.
This critical upgrade will involve the installation of new composite decking boards designed to enhance safety for both pedestrians and cyclists by improving traction. “Our goal is to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all trail users,” a VDOT spokesperson stated.
The Virginia Capital Trail is a vital route connecting Jamestown to downtown Richmond, serving as a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and commuters alike. The upcoming closure is expected to disrupt regular use of the trail, with local residents urged to plan alternate routes during the construction period.
The bridge deck replacement is a part of ongoing efforts to maintain and improve the infrastructure of the Capital Trail, which continues to gain popularity. Additionally, a planned Trail757 project aims to eventually link the Capital Trail with Colonial Williamsburg, further enhancing the region’s recreational opportunities.
Stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops and impacts unfold. Trail users should prepare for the upcoming changes and seek alternative paths to ensure their safety and convenience.
